Cornwall is well known for its plethora of wildlife, both on land and in the water, and recent video footage captured off the coast of Falmouth reaffirms this, as a superpod of around 100 dolphins have been spotted playing in the water.
The common dolphins were spotted in from Pendennis Point to Maenporth – close to our 5 star holiday cottages, Falmouth.
Billy Heaney was among the people who braved the cold weather to watch the dolphins frolicking on Sunday (15th January) and said that the sight made for a “cracking Sunday funday”.
Speaking of the event, Billy said the following:
“They appeared to be feeding on bait fish, such as herring or mackerel. These dolphins were common dolphins, and are more usually seen in deeper/coastal shelf waters, so to see them this close in was a real treat.
“It was also great to see that a lot of families with young children were able to see them so close to Gylly beach, Swanpool and Pendennis point car park. It was a great Sunday outing for everyone involved.”

This is the second sighting of dolphins in the south of Cornwall in recent weeks – normally a rare sight – as a pod of common dolphins were also recently filmed swimming in the harbour of St Ives.
Tony Mason managed to film the dolphins in his home town, and was quite surprised to have spotted the dolphins after living in Cornwall for so long, saying:
“I have lived here more than 50 years and not seen them in there and haven’t heard from anyone who has.”
