If, like many Poldark fans out there, you are missing your fill of the Cornish-based drama, then a new exhibition at Truro’s Royal Cornwall Museum could be just for you!
The museum, located close to our 5 star Cornwall cottages, is already home to Poldark author Winston Graham’s typewriter and even handwritten manuscripts from the great man.
It also runs the Winston Graham Historical Fiction prize, which comes with a £3,000 prize for the winning entry. The competition involves writers submitting a work of historical fiction, which preferably has a clear connection to Cornwall.
But now it is taking a new turn with a trail of 18th Century objects inspired by the story, alongside stills from the current series.
The museum’s collection of objects includes sculptures, ceramics, transport, paintings, glass and furniture. It was curated by Dr Hannah Greig, a University of York Historian and Poldark TV series Historical Advisor.
Not only will the new exhibition highlight the museum’s collection, but it will also feature Dr Greig’s behind the scenes knowledge of the TV series.
Speaking of the new exhibition, she said: “Encounter the portraits, transport and the equally fascinating personal effects from that period that link into the Poldark TV series. This written guide takes you to the heart of the Royal Cornwall Museum’s collection and I hope visitors will have the chance to enjoy this new trail in the run up to the third Poldark series airing on September 4th.”
The exhibition has been made possible thanks to Andrew, the son of Winston Graham who is a consultant on the series, and Mammoth Screen, Poldark TV’s production company.
Explaining why the exhibition is set up in such a way, Andrew said:
“I want visitors to the museum to see an authentic blend of historical objects from the 1800s but with a twist.
“I also wanted to acknowledge my father’s unique relationship with the Museum, where he left many of his original notebooks, showing his novels written in long hand, as well as the typewriter on which he wrote to his many fans.”
The exhibition opens on the 4th February and is a must-see for all Poldark fans. Located around 10 minutes from our cottages, it will make the perfect day out on your next visit!
