On the North Coast near Newquay (B3285). A spectacular soft sand beach renowned for great surfing conditions and family friendly atmosphere. The beach is based by a pretty coastal town which attracts many tourists in the summer but benefits from facilities and parking nearby. There’s also The Watering Hole’ boasting as the UK’s ONLY on the beach bar.
On the south-west coast of Cornwall close to the market town of Helston, (A394) Porthleven is a charming traditional harbour town. Set in the middle of a huge sweeping bay, Porthleven is ideal for families. It has one of the most impressive harbours in Cornwall, fishing boats land their daily catch in Porthleven. The beach can be reached via a 15 minutes walk from the harbour front around the peninsular to a 3.5 mile stretch of open coast and sand.
Gwenver’s name is derived from Gwynevere of Authurian legend and it does have a beauty about it. Situated at the base of a grassy cliff the beach is just about secluded and in-accessible enough to not get really crowded. The beach itself is sandy and around 150 metres long. Head towards Lands End on the A30 and turn right by the Chapel just before Sennen.
Otherwise known as Porthluney, this is a good south facing beach of sand overlooking Gerrans Bay. It is uncovered at all states of the tide and lies just below Caerhays Castle (built in 1808 by John Nash). It is a safe spot for bathers, although care must be taken near the headlands at either end of the beach. There is a large car park here, with a cafe, shop and toilets.
A large west-facing sandy beach located between Pentire Point and Towan Head. Fistral is world reknowned in surfing circles as probably the best surfing beach in the UK. The waves break from east to west from the Cribbar Rocks and the beach often gets crowded very quickly. There can be very big surf and rip currents at certain times, so the instructions of the lifeguards should be strictly followed. There are also good coastpath walking opportunities southwest towards Pentire Point East and Crantock.
Marazion beach is about a mile long, starting in front of the town and curving round to the Station House pub/restaurant. The bay continues for about another 2 miles becoming Longrock beach and then Eastern Green All dog friendly areas. Towards the town end the beach becomes rockier after which there are a series of small rocky coves. It is from this end of the beach that you can walk over to St Michael’s Mount at low tide along a stone causeway.
Porth Kidney Sands lies on the western bank of the Hayle estuary. The nearby village of Lelant offers refreshments. A deceptively large stretch of white sand with a huge expanse of sand at low tide. There are extensive dunes. Unfortunately there is only limited road parking. There is a recommendation for No Swimming here due to strong river currents.
Situated toward The Lizard, Church Cove’s main beach is Gunwalloe where there is lots of sand. There is said to be lost treasure from a wrecked Spanish ship in nearby Dollar Cove. There is a stream running through the beach, ideal for paddling.
