OH WHAT A LOVELY WAR AT THE MINACK THEATRE
2 August 2014
The Minack welcomes Geoffrey Whitworth in August as the company tours with its version of Joan Littlewood's Musical Entertainment Oh What A Lovely War.
The thought-provoking and poignant award winning play is Littlewood’s theatrical chronicle of the horrors of the First World War.
While the play is hugely entertaining with popular music hall songs of the period and a backbone of telling wit it also manages to deliver a very moving message about the futility of war.
First performed in 1963, the play is a warm and compassionate account of the lives of regular soldiers who gave their lives by the millions. One minute the audience will be singing along to familiar songs and the next shedding a tear at the sights and sounds of the cruellest of wars.
With six performances during the week, the play is one not to be missed.
