ST IVES FEAST COMING TO CORNWALL
9 January 2012
St Ives is preparing for its annual Feast Day celebrations, which will take place on 6th February.
A traditional event which marks the consecration of St Eia, the local parish church, this festival day is one of the most exciting in the town’s calendar. Contrary to what the name may suggest, the Feast is actually a celebration of the ancient Cornish sport of hurling, an early form of rugby. The spectacle begins on the beach and sees participants racing through the town, attempting to wrest the ball from each other, en route to their destination at the nearby Guildhall.
With roots tracing back to 1434, attending the St Ives Feast would be a great way to enjoy some genuine Cornish heritage. Whilst staying at cottages in Cornwall, you can also take the chance to soak up some of the beautiful seaside town’s many other sights, outside of the peak holiday season.
