Cornwall benefits from excellent torch relay

The opening day of the torch relay was hailed a ‘brilliant success’ after millions of people tuned in across the world to witness the arrival of the famous Olympic flame to our shores.

Beginning at Land’s End on Saturday at 07.15 BST, the first day of the relay ended at Plymouth Hoe in Devon where a live event was ready to welcome the torch to the county, capping off a brilliant opening to the Olympic Games.

Malcom Bell, head of VisitCornwall said: ‘It was just amazing. The torch relay was kicked off to a great start, it showcased Cornwall and the people of Cornwall had a great day and celebration.’

The economic benefits of the ceremony have already been felt in Falmouth, where its Business Improvement District said about £1.1 million had been spent by visitors.

It could mean even more British holiday makers will make their way to the county this summer following increased media exposure. If the coverage opened your eyes to the wonders Cornwall has to offer, be sure to book a stay in some fantastic 5 star accommodation in Cornwall.
