HUGE POD OF DOLPHINS SPOTTED OFF CORNISH COAST
7 June 2012
A massive pod of Risso’s dolphins have been spotted close to the Cornish coast, in what is the latest in a spate of exciting sightings over recent months.
Hannah Jones, a member of wildlife watching company Marine Discovery in Penzance, spotted the unusual occurrence near Lamorna and managed to catch one of the magical creatures on camera.
Easily identified by its bulbous head and bulky body, the Risso’s dolphin that was snapped was part of a pod of more than 40 dolphins, which is more than twice the size typical for its species.
Duncan Jones, who is partner Hannah and also works for Marine Discovery, was on their catamaran when they spotted the pod. He said: ‘We have seen Risso's dolphins before; that's the second time this year and we would expect to see them two or three times a year, but this was exciting. Seeing that number is really good.’
Why not see if you can spot one of these playful creatures whilst enjoying a break in some luxury accommodation in Cornwall?
