Top five ways to get fit on a Cornwall cottage holiday

FOR many people a New Year equals a ‘new you’ and a time to try and lose that extra Christmas weight.

There are lots of way to do that, so we’ve decided to have a look at five of the best ways to do it while staying in our luxury Cornwall cottages.

The Cornish Yoga Centre, based just a few miles from The Valley in Truro city centre, offers classes throughout the week for people looking to become more flexible and tone up while also looking after their soul. Not only does Yoga keep you fit it also keeps people mentally healthy, which means it can only serve to make you happy!

Cycling has enjoyed a huge boost since Wiggo won the Tour de France, with thousands of people taking up the sport. The good news is that if cycling’s your thing then the whole of Cornwall is your playground. The Visit Cornwall website has a list of the county’s best routes for you to check out. One of our favourites is the Goss Moor circular. It’s just a short hop up the A30 from The Valley and cyclists are certain to spot plenty of wildlife while cycling around the national nature reserve. Plus the trail is mostly flat and off-road!

Keep fit classes

Keep Fit Cornwall runs classes all over the county, in Hayle, Truro, Chacewater, Trispen and Threemilestone, making it easy to get to classes from Carnon Downs. The classes are varied, ranging from funky aerobics, toning, step classes and zumba fitness to a new Strictly Come Dancing workout called Fitsteps, so there really is something for almost everyone.

Cornwall’s famous for its beaches and the surfers who crowd them year round. Surfing is a notoriously tough sport, which works muscles in just about every part of the body. If you know what you’re doing then you’re spoilt or choice in Cornwall, especially given The Valley’s central location. If you’re a newcomer to surfing then we recommend taking some lessons. Perranporth Surf School, based at the nearest beach to The Valley, has an outstanding reputation and prides itself on catering to individual students’ needs.

If you’re looking for a bit more jeopardy in your keep fit regime, or need some fear to drive you on, then why not give paintballing a go. Truro Paintball is arguably Cornwall’s best paintball park and it’s just three miles from The Valley. Either book as a group or attend one of their ‘walk on’ events, where you’ll team up with strangers. Whichever option you pick you’ll have hours of fun, and burn calories, dashing round the graveyard, storming the beach and capturing flags.
