YOUR CHANCE TO MEET A CORNISH HERO

Your chance to meet a Cornish hero

Any regular followers of our blog will know how each week we bring you suggestions for things to do when you stay in our luxury holiday cottages in Cornwall.

Today we have an extra special suggestion – that you take the chance to meet a Cornish hero.

We can make the suggestion after learning how the legendary figure in recent Cornish folklore now runs a pub in the county – which any of our visitors can head along to.

Graham Hill is the man who, in 1991, managed to hang a four foot long pasty from the posts at Twickenham when Cornwall won rugby’s County Championship.

Already a well-known figure in the county having played rugby for Truro for many years, he was hailed as a hero following the stunt at the home of English rugby.

Graham’s since explained how he and some friends decided to carry out the stunt after a chat over quite a few beers.

The plan involved Graham’s son running on the pitch to create a distraction before Graham and his friends hung the pasty up, emulating an act carried out in 1908 – when Cornwall had last won the county championship.

The stunt made national news and Graham and his pals were given a hero’s reception almost as big as that given to the victorious players when they returned to Cornwall.

Now Graham has taken over at The Punchbowl and Ladle in Feock, just a few miles from the Valley, which means a simple trip out for some dinner by any of our guests could end up with them meeting a Cornish hero, and his wife Jacqui.

Visitors will also get some decent food and ale, since Graham has previous experience running The Crown at Lanlivery, The City Inn in Truro and the Roseland Inn at Philleigh, while Jacqui opened Truro’s first ever bistro, The Butcher’s, in 1970.
