Cream of Cornish farmers recognised at awards

Cornwall’s best farmers have been honoured in a glittering ceremony at the Cornwall Farm Business Awards this week.

Here at The Valley we like to provide guests with the best local produce on their Cornish cottage holidays so it’s nice to see a lot of familiar names recognised at the awards.

Among the winners was Rebecca Tonks, owner of a small egg-producing business which supplies a range of companies from tiny village stores to supermarket giants.

Rebecca scooped the Best Woman in Farming and Best farmer awards for her work at St Ewe Free Range Eggs.

The awards, held in the Pavilion Centre at the Royal Cornwall Showground, also saw Ladock farmer Paul Broad win the award for best dairy farmer and David and Sarah Buscombe from Cornwall Mill and Bakehouse win the best farm processor award.

The annual event is held to raise money for farmers’ charity the Addington Fund, which helps existing and retired farmers who have accommodation issues.

Guest speaker at the awards, Waitrose’s Heather Jenkins, said Cornwall was an important source of fresh food for the supermarket.
