NEWQUAY ROWING CLUB GETS NEW GRANT TO IMPROVE FACILITIES
20 March 2014
Have you ever taken a trip to Cornish holiday homes near the sea for a stay sat down by the shore and watched the fantastic job gig boat rowers do? Well if you enjoy such pastimes then you’ll be pleased to hear that Newquay Rowing Club is ‘pushing the boat out’ after landing a grant for £50,000 from the National Lottery.
The boost of cash from Sport England’s Inspired Facility Fund will subsidise some of the money needed to go towards the upgrading of the club’s facilities at the harbour.
Work is set to be carried out on the development in early June this year, with plans to facilitate a training area, build a store for gigs, changing facilities, showers, toilets, and a kitchen are on the cards.
There will be the added bonus of a function room being built above the gig store between the tunnel and the existing building.
Newquay’s MP, Stephen Gilbert, said: "It will be a fantastic community facility providing the club with premises that will be a worthy home for the heritage gigs and pilot gig rowing.“This funding has been made possible because of the driving force of Chairman, John Cuthill supported by leading rower, Mark Rea, the tireless work over 40 years of the Ladies' Committee, the commitment of the members and supporting letters from many people and organisations in the community".
