PIXIES ANNOUNCED AS HEADLINER FOR EDEN SESSIONS
28 March 2014
Giants of 1980s and 1990s alt-rock Pixies have been announced as the headliners for this year’s Eden Sessions.
The Eden Sessions is a series of mid-summer gigs held at The Eden Project near St Austell and over the past few years has drawn huge acts like Sigur Ros, Blink-182, Chic and The Kaiser Chiefs to Cornwall.
Now Pixies are set to become the latest to headline the sessions, which take place a short trip up the A30 from our luxury holiday cottages in Cornwall, on July 9.
The hugely influential band were formed in Boston in 1986 and count David Bowie, Bono and Thom Yorke among their biggest fans. They’ve become the fourth major act to be announced as headliners for the sessions, with more still to come.
British singer-songwriter Ellie Goulding plays the day before Pixies, on July 8, while Brit-rockers Elbow follow them on July 14 and rapper Dizzee Rascal heads to the Duchy on June 21.
Pixies are made up of front man and guitarist Black Francis, lead guitarist Joey Santiago, and David Lovering on drums. They will be appearing at Eden with guest bassist Paz Lenchantin after Kim Deal decided to leave the band last year.
Last September the band released EP-1, followed by EP-2 in January, the band’s first new releases in more than 20 years.
In the past Radiohead’s Thom Yorke has told music journalists when he was at school Pixies changed his life, while U2 frontman Bono is on record as saying the band is “one of America's greatest ever".
Some of the highest praise the band has received came from David Bowie, who said Pixies made "just about the most compelling music of the entire 80s”.
The band have a huge cult following but arguably achieved their biggest slice of fame and recognition when their track Where Is My Mind was used at the end of the film Fight Club, which starred Brad Pitt, Helena Bonham-Carter and Edward Norton.
When Eden announced the gig Rita Broe, the project’s marketing director, said: “For nearly 30 years Pixies have been one of the most revered rock bands in the world and have inspired a universe of other top artists.
“We’re massively excited to be able to welcome them to Eden. It feels like Pixies and the Sessions is a marriage made in rock heaven. With their addition to an already massive bill, this promises to be our best Sessions season ever.”
