Poldark remake to be filmed in Cornwall

A much loved TV series set in Cornwall is set to return to the small screen – and will be filmed in the county.

The BBC raised controversy last year when it filmed much of its flagship drama Jamaica Inn, based on the novel by Daphne Du Maurier, in Cumbria rather than Cornwall.

But it looks set to avoid such controversy with Poldark, which will be filmed at locations near many places to stay in Cornwall, including The Valley.

Although parts of Poldark, which was based on novels by Winston Graham and originally shown on the BBC between 1975 and 1977, have already been filmed in Wiltshire top BBC executives have assured fans of the series most of the remaining scenes will be shot in the Duchy.

Production Company Mammoth Screen started filming on Corsham High Street and Chavenage House, near Tetbury last week, but will head to Cornwall in June and July.

Publicist for the show Lisa Vanoli said she could promise the show would be headed South West.

“We’ll be filming a huge chunk of the show in Cornwall,” she said, “a lot more than in the original TV series.

“All the scenes which rely on key landscapes will be shot in the county and indeed, Ross Poldark’s house will be one of those, but sometimes you have to film outside an area.”

The new series, due to be shown in 2015 on BBC One, will star Irish film star Aidan Turner in what producers say will be a far “steamier” version of Poldark than the original.

The 1970s series ran for 29 episodes and as many as 15 million viewers for each episode. In fact, some churches even changed service times to avoid seeing congregation numbers drop at services which clashed with the show’s Sunday evening slot.
