Second series of Poldark announced
April 22nd, 2015
This morning, reasons to be cheerful include the announcement of a second series of Poldark – a whole further eight episodes of the rather dashing Aidan Turner as Ross Poldark, aided and abetted by Eleanor Tomlinson as Demelza.
Here at The Valley in sunny Cornwall, we can think of dozens of Poldark related places to visit on a short break in Cornwall including picturesque Porthgwarra Beach (home to the skinny dipping scene), Gunwalloe and Church Cove (the shipwreck scene), Charlestown (a historic port which not only features in Poldark but in Tim Burtons’ Alice in Wonderland, The Three Musketeers and The Eagle Has Landed), Porthcothnan and St Breward up near Padstow (Nampara Cove, Nampara cottages, also a duel and many of the horse riding scenes were filmed in this area).
If your taste is for mining, Poldark Mine near Helston was used for the mining scenes. However, this mine was not always called “Poldark” as Winston Graham gave the owners permission to use the name and then launched several of the books in the Poldark series there including the last in the series in 2002, a year before his death. Originally, the mine was Wheal Roots, part of the Wendron mining area. It was probably in use in the 1700’s and by the 1800’s was considered a very old mine.
Other historic mines include Levant Mine and Owles and Crowns near Botallack, which played the roles of Tresidders Rolling Mill and Wheal Leisure respectively while Geevor Tin Mine at Pendeen advised and supplied kibbles and period tools to the production of the new Poldark.
