Why Cornwall is the Ideal Holiday Destination for Families

August 31st, 2018

Cornwall is one of the top holiday destinations in the UK, and holiday-makers flock here every summer to make the most of the amazing beaches, activities and scenery on offer in the coastal county. But what makes Cornwall such a good choice for a family holiday destination?

Beaches in Cornwall are Perfect for Families

As a coastal county, made up of over 300 miles of coastline, Cornwall certainly features an extensive selection of beaches. The seaside is a massive draw for tourists, and also plays a big part in Cornish life. With more than 300 beaches in the county, there will be a spot to lay your towel down close by to pretty much anywhere you go in Cornwall! While some beaches are ideal for teens and adults who love to catch waves, others are perfect for little ones, with sandy shores and shallow waters that are safe for tots to paddle in.

If you want to give some seaside sports a go, but don’t have all the gear, then there is no need to worry, as many of Cornwall’s beaches feature surf schools, or stands where you can rent a board or boat for the day! Cornish beaches are also ideal for curious kids, who will love exploring the rock pools and going crabbing, allowing them to get up close with a wide range of marine life.

Family-Friendly Attractions in Cornwall

When looking for a family holiday to keep the whole group entertained, several challenges can arise. Finding something to keep little ones amused, while remaining interesting for the adults is not an easy task, but luckily Cornwall offers up many attractions that are perfect for the whole family. While classic theme park fun can be had at Flambards, and a whole host of other attractions like zoos and museums, it’s the natural and historical discoveries that are really worth the visit.

One of the biggest attractions in Cornwall is the Eden Project, which draws in families with the promise of a fun, yet educational day in the world’s largest indoor rainforest. With thrill-seekers able to take to the skies in a zip wire that spans the entire grounds, kids can explore the outdoor adventure spaces and soft play zones. The real star of the show here though is, of course, the biomes, which house the incredible indoor rainforest and Mediterranean zones. While Cornwall may be a slice of paradise on the English coast, you’ll truly feel like you’re in heaven walking into Eden.

As a land of myth and legend, Cornwall is also home to an impressive list of magical castles and fortresses, many of which line the stunning coastline. From Tintagel Castle in the North to Pendennis on the South coast, Cornwall is rich with history to explore, with interactive days out revealing some interesting insights into life in Cornwall’s past. The kids will love running around the castle walls and re-enacting historical battles, or even watching a live jousting match!

A truly unique day out in Cornwall can be found at Heartlands, which is a free, family-friendly attraction based in a World Heritage Site. Featuring something for everyone, Heartlands boasts a giant play space, as well as craft workshops, interactive exhibits and a beautiful botanical garden, all sat around an old mine and engine house!

Truro

The only city in Cornwall, Truro, was recently voted the best place in the UK for family-friendly holidays. While we might be biased, we can definitely see why, as this city has everything from historical charm to exciting activities for kids – plus it’s right by the sea, and some incredibly beautiful rivers! The Cathedral and the Royal Cornwall Museum can be found in the city centre, along with a whole host of shops. The museum offers an assortment of interactive activities and discovery trails, providing plenty of entertainment for the little ones. Surrounding Truro is the stunning Cornish landscape, with natural wonders to be found everywhere you turn. From hidden beaches to National Trust gardens, there is an abundance of beautiful spots to explore.

Travelling to Cornwall

With one in four families revealing that they prefer to travel by car to reach their holiday destination than fly, Cornwall is the perfect place for many holidaymakers in the UK. When you have kids in tow, it can be a relief to avoid the palaver of airport check-ins and weight-restricted suitcases. Instead, pack up some snacks and play car games as you enjoy the beautiful scenery of Bodmin moors driving through Cornwall! If you are coming from further away, then Newquay airport has arrivals from around the UK each day.
