Cornwall named as top UK food destination

June 09th, 2016

Cornwall is well known for the scenery, beaches and sun, but it they are not the only reason why Cornwall is one of the most popular holiday destinations in the UK, as it is also the food that draws them to the county.

Foodies have been flocking to Cornwall to sample some of the nation’s best cuisine and experience some sea-front fine dining, and more will come as Cornwall has been named as one of the top food tourism destinations in the world.

Travel company Expedia has revealed Cornwall reached number three on their ‘Europe on a Plate’ survey, stating that 23% of Britons would stay in the area for food alone. Cornwall was placed behind Puglia in Italy which had 34% of the vote and Madrid in Spain which got 25%.

So why has it won the top spot for food tourism in the UK?

Malcolm Bell, chief executive for VisitCornwall said it was no surprise: “British cuisine has been on the rise for 30 years and Cornwall’s reputation has a far higher trajectory – you’ve only got to watch a food programme like Saturday Kitchen to hear Cornwall mentioned.”

Cornwall has been introduced to some fine dining in recent years, as a number of celebrity chefs have set up restaurants across the county. The stunning Cornish setting seems to be the ideal place for some luxurious food.

The locally sourced food, abundance of seafood and passion of the people have truly made Cornwall earn its place as one of the top food destinations. We encourage anyone staying at our family cottages on holiday in Cornwall to sample the delicious food the county has to offer.
