Rescued Seal Pups back to the wild at Gwithian
April 24th, 2015
Six seal pups have been released into the wild today at Gwithian Beach near Hayle. The pups, who were rescued earlier this year by the Cornish Seal Sanctuary at Gweek, were named and nursed back to health and now Odin, Shrek, Hulk, Pepper, Frost and Aquaman are back in coastal waters off Cornwall.
Each year, the seal sanctuary takes in seals and seal pups that have become stranded or injured. Sometimes the pups get separated from their mum, and other times adult seals are injured in bad weather conditions or other incidents. The sanctuary has seen a rise in animals injured after becoming tangled up in plastic rubbish or discarded fishing gear. Injured seals are treated in the sanctuary hospital and then go on to recuperate in the pools before being released.
The Seal Sanctuary is also a child and pet friendly day out as there are lots of things for children to do and dogs are allowed into the sanctuary on leads. A day out here can be wallet friendly too if you buy tickets online – plus if you don’t see it all you can go back as many times as you like in the following seven days.
The Seal Sanctuary at Gweek is only 20 minutes from our luxury cottages for pets in Cornwall here at The Valley.
