In August 2019, Cornwall is bursting with brilliant events, from festivals to outdoor theatre experiences! With so much to see and do in the beautiful county, we take a look at some of the best events, so you don’t miss out.
Perhaps one of the largest festivals in the country, Boardmasters takes place in Newquay every year. The festival is a mixture of surfing, skating and music. Some of the headlining acts include Foals, Florence + The Machine, Mabel, Jax Jones and many more! But it isn’t all about the music, Boardmasters is the most high-profile surfing event in the UK. Professional surfers from across the globe head to Fistral Beach to take part in the World Surf League. They all try their best to qualify for the World Championship Tour so you can expect to see some exciting action! In addition to this, skating and BMX enthusiasts from all ends of the country gather at Boardmasters to showcase their skills on the CANNA Ramp. From the young ones just entering the game to the UK pros, there will be plenty of talent attending the adrenaline fuelled event! Alongside all of this incredible action, there is also a field dedicated to family fun! The activities include circus skills, face painting, kids’ discos and much more. With all of this to choose from, there is plenty for the little ones to do and they will undoubtedly be entertained!
The quiet town of Fowey host a regatta and carnival for a week in August every year. It isn’t just any race either; it’s the Fowey Royal Regatta, one of Britain’s premier sailing events! Thousands of visitors attend the event every year to watch some fantastic sailing but to also take part in some of the enjoyable activities that are on offer. On Wednesday, the carnival takes place – expect marching bands, colourful parade floats, people in fancy dress. Down on the quay, you can watch a fantastic firework display while listening to some live music.
Cornwall’s biggest motoring event returns this summer for three days! Held in Newquay, the event is much more than just cars. Expect to see some live music and stunt shows too! As well as this entertainment, there are also motor dealers for new and second hand and a display of exquisite classic cars. There are also some lovely food stands and refreshments available. Something that is possibly most exciting about the Cornwall Motorfest this year is that the event is hosting an ABBA tribute act! This is something for the whole family to enjoy and sing along to. So take the kids along and get involved in the fun!
Cornwall is home to some truly breathtaking beaches and what better way to spend a lovely summers evening than enjoying a film on the sand with family and friends! Throughout August, Porthminster Beach will be hosting screenings of a variety of films. Two films that will undoubtedly be a hit with the kids are Finding Nemo on the 18th and Moana on the 25th. Tickets are £5.00 each and can be purchased on the Cornish cinema club Facebook or website page.
There is a takeaway where you can buy some tasty snacks and refreshments, or you may pack your own nibbles and bring them along with you. There are only a few deck chairs on the beach, and these come on a first come, first serve basis, so we recommend you pack a picnic mat or some chairs just in case. Although it will be warm throughout the day, it can get chilly in the evenings, so bring a few cosy blankets. Enjoy some quality family time while watching the best films in the most beautiful setting!
The Eden Project is in Bodelva, Cornwall and is a well-loved educational attraction. You can learn all about the living world and unearth how we can better our future. The main feature is the massive biomes that are home to rainforest like climates. Within these biomes are plants and exhibitions where you can learn more about the environments within tropical locations such as Southeast Asia and West Africa.
Throughout August, the Eden Project is hosting an event called “Earth Story”; this is an opportunity to discover evolution! There will be a mixture of activities, such as virtual reality safari where you can come face-to-face with a giant armadillo! There will also be a new addition to the outdoor gardens called Minibeast Mansion. A perfect place for the kids to run around and burn off some energy as they crawl through tunnels and climb up some nets. There is also an incredible exhibition where you can discover some of the Earths most weird and wonderful creatures. Something that we think the kids will love is finding the ice-age mammoth skeleton, just like the one from Ice Age! You can grasp the sheer size of the magnificent mammals. In addition to these brilliant activities, there are also numerous science workshops and storytelling in the biomes. With so much to see and do, this is an event you don’t want to miss this summer!
