Cornwall is undoubtedly one of the most tourist friendly places in the U.K, it’s no wonder that Cornwall sees many people make their way down the country to spend their holidays here. From its far-stretching coastlines of gorgeous, golden sands, that meet the crystal waters to its dramatic landscapes- Cornwall’s beauty is truly the perfect backdrop for a romantic getaway. If you’re looking at luxury Falmouth holidays it may be worth making a list of activities to try on your visit.
High above the waters reach sits Pendennis castle, built by Henry VIII and heavily featured during both World Wars. This place is not only a destination for history lovers, but an attraction for lovers also. Experience unspoilt views across the water, where you can see many boats sailing across the sea. Try and spot some grey seals bobbing up and down, playing with the tide. (We recommend bringing along some binoculars for this!).
Falmouth sports some of the best gardens in England. With tropical plants aplenty, exotic colours and unusual appearances, you will be blown away by the offers of the gardens in the Falmouth area.
Head over to Trebah Gardens, to enjoy the descent from the manor house right down to the bottom of this incredible garden. Take a little passageway to a hidden cove, and during summer season – you can even enjoy a delicious Cornish ice-cream from a little hut situated on the coves outskirts.
Glendurgan Garden is a National Trust site that sits just next door to Trebah, and sports a maze that sits at the bottom of a valley. Release your inner child and play a game of it through the hedge maze.
Whilst Trelissick Garden has some great views across the Falmouth estuary, with numerous gardens to explore, decorated with colour and pattern. There are even some robins that will come right up to you for some seeds or bug grub – if you bring it along!
Perhaps one of the most romantic things to try is by night. If you’re feeling particularly romantic, why not even bring some champagne and strawberries to set the night alight?
Trelissick Garden can be a great destination for panoramic views, and to spot a constellation. Alternatively, another suggestion would be the Wheal Busy, near Chacewater – situated between Redruth and Truro. Part of the Cornwall and West Devon Landscape World Heritage sites, this rugged area is a perfect and secluded location to do a bit of stargazing.
After your stargazing experience, be sure to head back to your luxury resort and jump in a hot tub to warm up!
Falmouth is known for its great food, and with many great restaurants to try from you will not be disappointed! Some of the accredited restaurants in Falmouth include Oliver’s and Rick Steins. If you fancy trying something a little different, Cribbs can offer you some of the best Caribbean dishes you will sample or Ploy Thai for some great and authentic Thai dishes. Or alternatively, head to Hunky Dorey’s for some of the most beautifully crafted dishes you will set your eyes on.
One experience that you should definitely put on your list is the quaint and award winning pub of Pandora’s Inn. Sample the catch of the day, or simply head over for a drink. This thatched roof pub sits directly opposite the riverside, and you can even have a drink on its pontoon- if the weather permits. With cosy fires and tasty food on offer, your visit will be sure not to disappoint!
One of the hidden gems of Falmouth is the cocktail bar known as The Brig. Head down the spiral stairs to this underground bar, decked out like a ship! Not only are the cocktails simply delicious, but the friendly staff are always happy to have a natter! Pick your spirit of choice, and choose from an array of scrumptious options. If you’re both feeling adventurous, pick each other’s cocktail! This place is somewhat cosy, so be sure to go early or later in the evening to avoid disappointment.
Start your morning on the soft sands of Gylly beach. If you’re an early riser, you can watch a magnificent sun rise over the water. Be sure to bring a blanket to sit on, as there are only a few benches dotted around this beach. Watch as the sky transforms from an inky blue to a beautiful tapestry of blues, orange, yellow and pink. You may even be witness to some brave souls bracing the cold waters of the morning- which is a sight in itself to behold!
Once the sun has risen, make a few steps over to the Gylly beach cafe for a warm drink and a hearty breakfast! If you’re feeling energetic after your meal, head over to Maenporth beach, past Swanpool beach, along the coastal path, where you will see some spectacular views across the water. Maenporth beach is a tiny secluded spot, which can be a great location for a picnic- with a couple of benches that line the beach, with unspoilt views of the sea. The golden sands and crystal blue waters of this idyllic beach can be one of the most romantic places to visit on your Falmouth holiday. Watch as the boats sail across the water and out of view.
